HEARTWORM SEASON

IS HERE!

Heartworm disease can be potentially fatal but is easily preventable.

Heartworm is transmitted when an infected mosquito bites your pet.  Therefore during summer months your pet needs to be on a monthly preventative to reduce the risk of becoming infected.

We carry basic heartworm preventatives as well as combination preventatives that also control fleas, ticks and other parasites.

Every year before starting a monthly preventative, your pet should be tested for heartworm disease to ensure that they had not contracted heartworm previously and to ensure that it is safe to begin taking preventative medications.  Visible signs are often only evident in the later stages of the disease.  So even overtly healthy pets need to be tested.

A small sample of blood is taken and the test is run while you wait (approximately 10 minutes).  This year, we are using a 4 way test that not only tests for heartworm disease, but also 3 tick-borne diseases, including Lyme disease.

Please call today to book your appointment! (519) 647-3921

...and remember, preventatives should ideally be taken monthly beginning June 1st.

WELLNESS TESTING

Early detection and intervention can help your four-legged family members live longer and healthier lives.  When your pet misses going to the doctor at least once a year, it is like a human not going to the doctor for seven years!

Have you noticed any of the following in your pet?

  • bad breath or swollen gums

  • not acting like themselves

  • interacting less often with family

  • responding less enthusiastically

  • trouble getting up and down

  • increased stiffness or limping

  • urinating and/or drinking more often

  • changing eating patterns

  • losing housetraining habits

  • changing sleeping patterns

  • becoming confused or disoriented

  • changing hair coat/skin, lumps, bumps

  • scratching more often

  • showing tremors or shaking

  • difficulty seeing and/or hearing

  • losing or gaining weight

Any or all of these can be signs of illness which can be detected through Wellness Testing.  A Wellness Test consists of a complete blood count, 12 panel biochemistry profile and electrolyte panel.  From April until June, bring in your pet for Wellness Testing and get a complimentary T4 thyroid level, heartworm test or urinalysis.
